Anyone here have an FFL ?

I'm seriously thinking of taking the next jump to FFL. Afterall, I'm attending gun shows regularly to rent tables and there's an advantage in buying firearms at discount as well as the obvious increase in firearms on display to sell. Additionally, as a true business the money would definitely help.

The only caveat to this is the paperwork. Sure, I've bought lots of firearms and performing the usual yellow paper process............but now I'd have to keep track of other records and is this really only re-enforcing the system I've grown to despise constructed by the ATF ?

Perhaps someone here with an FFL or knows of one personally can help shed some light on the situation.

Thanks,
~AD

I had one in the late 80's. I let it expire, as I didn't use it for much... mostly mail ordering milsurp long guns. The paperwork wasn't that bad back then, but knowing how "da gubmint" operates, it's probably a LOT worse now. If you plan on doing this to increase your business, I'd recommend talking with a gun dealer who holds a current FFL and seeing exactly what is involved paperwork-wise.

I've been seriously considering this, too. I'd like to quit my babysitting, er, teaching job, and do this. I have no delusions about making any money from it - it's just something I've wanted to do.

I've got a C&R license, and that's pretty cool. Midway gives big discounts on almost everything, including mags and ammo, to FFL holders. And it was nice having UPS deliver SKSs and Mosin-Nagants to the front door (note past tense, from when they could be had, especially the SKSs), and not have to pay 20% of the gun's value for a transfer fee to some other FFL.

Anyway, I checked a few of the numerous links about getting a regular FFL, and from what I remember, you can expect a visit from our friends at ATF to inspect your "facilities." I know one thing for sure - I'm going to need a bigger safe!

Just remember you are not only opening up your home (unless you intend to open a storefront) to inspection from the ATF but you must also have established store hours when your business is open to the public. You will also need to obtain the various State licenses and permits as well as liability insurance. It is a very tough way to make a living, I would say you either have to have a second full time job or be able to live on savings for probably the first 2 years. I had a brick and mortar store for about 20 years btw.

According to what I have read on various discussion forums....if you don't have a brick and mortar store, the chances of you getting aproved for an FFL are about nil anymore. The Firing Line and The Highroad are two places you can do more reseach at.
